| DON'T eat your rice with toppings. Such as soy sauce, sugar and such. DO try to eat all your rice.
DON'T lift your pinky while drinking something, unless you're gay / bi / lesbian. DO cover your mouth when you yawn.
DON'T eat until all your food is served. DO slurp your noodles.
DON'T stick your chopsticks straight into your food. DO try to say "Itadakimasu" before every meal.
DON'T have your back face the person sitting near you on the subway. DO be quiet in elevators.
DON'T eat on the subway. DO bring a small gift to other people's houses.
DON'T sit in elderly people seats on the subway. (They're usually a different color) DO offer food and drinks when people visit your home.
DON'T cut your nails in public. DO use polite Japanese when speaking to strangers.
DON'T eat as you walk. DO put business cards and such in your front pockets. Not back.
DON'T open gifts in front of the giver of the gift. DO be quiet everywhere.
DON'T use your cell phone on the train. DO take off your shoes if you see other shoes laying near the door.
DON'T go outside barefoot. DO snort instead of blow your nose.
DON'T whistle at night. DO wash off before entering a public bath or hot spring.
DON'T use hand symbols much. A lot are different there and you may offend someone. DO always travel with someone. | |
